Saturn’s seasonal variability from four decades of ground-based mid-infrared observations

چکیده
A multi-decade record of ground-based mid-infrared (7-25 $\mu$m) images Saturn is used to explore seasonal and non-seasonal variability in thermal emission over more than a Saturnian year (1984-2022). Thermal measured by 3-m 8-m-class observatories compares favourably with synthetic based on both Cassini-derived temperature records the predictions radiative climate models. 8-m class facilities are capable resolving contrasts scale Saturn's belts, zones, polar hexagon, cyclones, superimposed onto large-scale asymmetries. Seasonal changes brightness temperatures $\sim30$ K stratosphere $\sim10$ upper troposphere observed, as northern southern stratospheric vortices (NPSV SPSV) form spring dissipate autumn. The timings first appearance warm successfully reproduced models, confirming them be phenomena, albeit entrained within sharp boundaries influenced dynamics. Axisymmetric bands (4-5 per hemisphere) display gradients that strongly correlated zonal winds, indicating winds decay strength altitude, implying meridional circulation cells forming system cool zones belts. structure largely repeatable from (via comparison infrared 1989 2018), exception low-latitudes. Here we find evidence inter-annual variations because equatorial banding at 7.9 $\mu$m inconsistent $\sim15$-year period for oscillation, i.e., it not strictly semi-annual. Finally, observations between 2017-2022 extend legacy Cassini mission, revealing continued warming NPSV during summer. [Abr.]

Interannual variability of mid‐tropospheric CO2 from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder
[1] Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) offers a unique opportunity to investigate the variability of mid‐tropospheric CO2 over the entire globe. In this paper, we use AIRS data to examine the interannual variability of CO2 and find significant correlations between AIRS mid‐tropospheric CO2 and large‐scale atmospheric dynamics. During El Niño events, mid‐tropospheric CO2 over the central Pacifi...

متن کاملHigh Spatial Resolution Mid-infrared Observations of Three Seyfert Galaxies
Images at 12.5 lm of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies—NGC 1275, NGC 4151, and NGC 7469— have been obtained with the 10 m Keck Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure (<0>04) 0>08, or less than 13 26 pc at a position angle of 135 . From a comparison with structure seen at millimeter wavelengths, this structure is interpreted as a disk aligned with the mole...
متن کاملThe strange mid - infrared spectrum of M 31 : ISOCAM observations ?
We present observations of the mid-IR spectrum of 4 small regions of M 31. The spectrum of the central 3′ is characterized by a strong, broad unidentified emission band (UIB) at 11.3 μm while the other usual UIBs at 6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 μm are absent or very faint. We present a map of this area in the 11.3 μm band and compare it with optical and H i images. The spectra of two other regions are simi...
متن کاملMid Infrared Observations of Van Maanen 2: No Substellar Companion
The results of a comprehensive infrared imaging search for the putative 0.06M⊙ astrometric companion to the 4.4 pc white dwarf van Mannen 2 are reported. Adaptive optics images acquired at 3.8μm reveal a diffraction limited core of 0.09 and no direct evidence of a secondary. Models predict that at 5 Gyr, a 50MJ brown dwarf would be only 1 magnitude fainter than van Maanen 2 at this wavelength a...
